💳 TRADELINES & NET-30 VENDORS

Build Business Credit With Accounts That Report

Once your business is established, your business checking account is active, and you understand the basics of business credit, you may be ready to start adding tradelines to your business credit profile.

You do not need to open a lot of accounts at once. The goal is to establish positive payment history with accounts that actually report to the business credit bureaus.

📌 WHAT IS A TRADELINE?

A tradeline is a credit account that appears on your business credit report.

Business tradelines may include:

  • Vendor accounts
  • Net-30 accounts
  • Business credit cards
  • Business lines of credit
  • Certain loans or financing accounts
  • Credit-building accounts that report business payments

Simply opening an account does not necessarily mean it will help build your business credit.

The company must report your payment activity to one or more business credit bureaus for that account to help establish payment history with that bureau.

🧾 WHAT IS A NET-30 ACCOUNT?

A Net-30 account allows an approved business to purchase products or services now and pay the invoice within 30 days.

For example:

Your business purchases $75 in shipping supplies.

Instead of paying for the order immediately, the vendor invoices your business.

Your invoice may state:

Amount Due: $75
Payment Terms: Net-30

This means the $75 balance must be paid according to the vendor's terms, generally within 30 days.

If that vendor reports your payment activity to a business credit bureau, your payment history may become part of your business credit profile.

⚠️ NET-30 DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN BUSINESS CREDIT

This is VERY important.

Just because a company offers Net-30 payment terms does not mean the company reports to the business credit bureaus.

Before opening an account, find out:

Does this company report business payment history?

Which bureau does it report to?

The three major business credit bureaus you will commonly hear about are:

Dun & Bradstreet (D&B)
Experian Business
Equifax Business

A vendor may report to one bureau, two bureaus, all three, or none at all.

Reporting policies can also change, so always verify the vendor's current reporting practices before applying.

💡 DON'T OPEN ACCOUNTS JUST TO BUY SOMETHING

Business credit should not be about spending money unnecessarily.

Whenever possible, choose vendors that sell something your business can actually use.

If you need shipping boxes, buy shipping boxes.

If you need office supplies, buy office supplies.

If you need marketing services, use a company that provides a service that benefits your business.

You don't need a closet full of products you didn't need just because someone told you that you needed tradelines.

Spend with a purpose.

💰 PAY YOUR INVOICES RESPONSIBLY

Getting approved for a tradeline is only the beginning.

Your payment history is what you're trying to establish.

Pay your invoices according to the agreed payment terms and avoid late payments.

Don't purchase more than your business can comfortably afford to repay.

The goal is to demonstrate that your business can responsibly manage its financial obligations.

🚫 DON'T APPLY FOR EVERYTHING AT ONCE

You don't need 10 or 20 accounts just because you're trying to build business credit.

Start small.

Establish a few useful reporting accounts, manage them responsibly, and give your business credit profile time to develop.

Business credit is built over time—not overnight.

💳 BUSINESS CREDIT CARDS

Be careful when applying for something simply because it says:

“BUSINESS CREDIT CARD”

Not every business credit card reports positive payment activity to every business credit bureau.

Some may report to one or more commercial bureaus. Some may involve your personal credit when you apply. Many business credit cards also require a personal guarantee, particularly when the business does not yet have a strong independent credit profile.

Before applying, find out:

Which business credit bureaus does the card report to?

Will my personal credit be checked?

Is a personal guarantee required?

Does the company report positive payment history or only serious delinquency/default information to certain bureaus?

Do your research before submitting an application.

🔎 MONITOR YOUR BUSINESS CREDIT

After establishing tradelines, don't assume they're reporting simply because you've made purchases and payments.

Periodically check your business credit profiles.

Look at:

Dun & Bradstreet
Experian Business
Equifax Business

You can also use a business credit monitoring service such as Nav to help monitor your business credit information.

Tradelines may take time to appear, and not every account will appear with every bureau.

💜 MRS GWEN'S RECOMMENDATION

Don't rush this process.

Get your business established first.

Open and actively use your business checking account.

Work on generating consistent business revenue.

Establish your business credit profiles.

Then begin adding useful tradelines as your business starts operating.

You don't have to go into debt to build business credit.

The purpose is to establish a positive financial history for your business so that when you eventually need access to credit or financing, you've already started building the foundation.

Remember:

Build the business.
Build the cash flow.
Build the credit.
Pay on time.
Monitor your progress.

⚠️ IMPORTANT

Vendor requirements, approval criteria, fees, minimum purchases and credit-bureau reporting practices can change at any time.

Always review the company's current terms and reporting practices directly with the vendor before applying or making purchases specifically for business-credit-building purposes.

Get the business established → EIN → Sales Tax ID if needed → Business checking → Business credit foundation → D&B/Nav → Tradelines/Net-30 → operate the business and build history.
