📸 Business Photos, Graphics & Content

Creating Professional-Looking Content Without Spending a Fortune

Your brand is starting to come together.

You have:

Your business name.

Your colors.

Your fonts.

Your logo.

Your brand style.

Now you need something to actually put on your:

🌐 Website

📱 Social media

🛍️ Product listings

📧 Emails

📣 Advertisements

🖨️ Flyers

That's where content comes in.

And here's something I want every new business owner to understand:

YOU DO NOT NEED A PROFESSIONAL PHOTO SHOOT EVERY TIME YOU NEED CONTENT.

Professional photography can absolutely be worth the investment.

But your phone, good lighting and a little planning can produce plenty of useful business content.

📱 START WITH THE PHONE YOU ALREADY HAVE

Modern smartphones can take excellent photos.

Before buying:

A professional camera.

Expensive lenses.

Photography equipment.

Studio lights.

ask yourself:

HAVE I LEARNED TO USE WHAT I ALREADY OWN?

For many small-business needs, your phone may be perfectly fine.

Especially for:

Product photos.

Behind-the-scenes content.

Social-media posts.

Short videos.

New inventory.

Work-in-progress photos.

Simple website images.

🧹 BEFORE YOU TAKE THE PICTURE — CLEAN YOUR CAMERA LENS

Seriously. 😂

Before taking photos:

WIPE THE CAMERA LENS.

A fingerprint or smudge can make an otherwise good photo look:

Cloudy.

Soft.

Blurry.

Hazy.

Before deciding your camera isn't good enough...

CLEAN THE LENS.

💡 LIGHTING CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING

Good lighting can make an inexpensive phone photo look much better.

Whenever possible, experiment with:

☀️ Natural daylight

🪟 Window light

💡 Soft lighting

Try to avoid:

Harsh shadows.

Extremely dark rooms.

Strong yellow lighting.

Bright light directly behind the product.

Mixed lighting that creates strange colors.

BEFORE BUYING NEW EQUIPMENT, TRY MOVING THE PRODUCT CLOSER TO A WINDOW.

Sometimes that's all you needed.

☀️ DON'T ASSUME DIRECT SUNLIGHT IS ALWAYS BETTER

Bright outdoor sunlight can create:

Harsh shadows.

Overexposure.

Squinting.

Reflections.

Uneven color.

Sometimes soft daylight or shade will produce a better photo.

EXPERIMENT.

Take several versions and compare them.

🧱 WATCH YOUR BACKGROUND

Your customer should notice:

THE PRODUCT.

Not:

Laundry.

Boxes.

Trash cans.

People walking behind you.

A messy counter.

Random inventory.

Cords.

Paperwork.

😳

You don't necessarily need an expensive photography backdrop.

You may be able to use:

A clean wall.

Poster board.

Foam board.

A clean tabletop.

Fabric.

A simple backdrop.

A neat area of your business.

KEEP THE BACKGROUND FROM COMPETING WITH THE SUBJECT.

⚪ SIMPLE BACKGROUNDS ARE OFTEN EASIER

For product listings, a simple background can help the product stand out.

Depending on the item, try:

White.

Cream.

Light gray.

Neutral tones.

or another background that fits your brand.

Lifestyle photos can have more going on.

But your basic product photos should make it easy to see:

WHAT YOU'RE ACTUALLY SELLING.

📦 TAKE MORE THAN ONE PRODUCT PHOTO

One picture may not tell the whole story.

Depending on the product, photograph:

📸 Front

📸 Back

📸 Side

📸 Top

📸 Bottom

📸 Packaging

📸 Labels

📸 Important features

📸 Size reference

📸 Accessories included

📸 Model/style view when appropriate

If the customer would want to see it before purchasing:

CONSIDER PHOTOGRAPHING IT.

🔎 SHOW IMPORTANT DETAILS

If your product has:

Texture.

Buttons.

Ports.

Zippers.

Stitching.

Labels.

Patterns.

Controls.

Special features.

take close-up photos.

Don't make customers zoom into a blurry picture trying to figure out what they're buying.

📏 HELP CUSTOMERS UNDERSTAND SIZE

Pictures can make products appear larger or smaller than they really are.

Include measurements in the description.

You can also photograph certain items next to an appropriate familiar object for scale when useful.

DON'T RELY ON THE PHOTO ALONE TO COMMUNICATE SIZE.

📦 OPEN-BOX, RESALE & USED ITEMS

If you're selling:

Open-box items.

Returns.

Shelf pulls.

Pre-owned items.

Damaged packaging.

Liquidation merchandise.

or anything that may not be in perfect retail condition:

PHOTOGRAPH THE ACTUAL CONDITION.

Show:

Scratches.

Dents.

Missing packaging.

Damaged boxes.

Opened packaging.

Wear.

Missing accessories.

Other known issues.

DON'T HIDE A FLAW BY PHOTOGRAPHING AROUND IT.

A clear picture can help the customer make an informed decision and may help reduce misunderstandings later.

🚫 DON'T OVER-EDIT PRODUCT PHOTOS

Editing can improve:

Brightness.

Cropping.

Straightening.

Background distractions.

Color balance.

But be careful.

If editing changes:

The actual color.

Condition.

Size.

Features.

Included accessories.

or overall appearance of the product...

the customer may receive something different from what they thought they purchased.

MAKE IT LOOK GOOD.

DON'T MAKE IT LOOK LIKE SOMETHING IT ISN'T.

🤳 WHAT ABOUT PHOTOS OF YOURSELF?

If you're part of your brand, you may need photos of yourself for:

About pages.

Social media.

Blog posts.

Marketing.

Speaking.

Business cards.

Email.

Advertisements.

You don't always need a professional photographer.

Try:

📱 Phone tripod

⏱️ Camera timer

💡 Good lighting

🧱 Clean background

👗 Clothing that fits your brand

📸 Several poses

Take plenty.

You may get 50 pictures and only love three.

THAT'S NORMAL. 😂

👔 THINK ABOUT WHAT THE PHOTO IS FOR

A photo for:

LinkedIn

may be different from:

TikTok.

A website About page may need something different from:

A Facebook sale post.

Ask:

WHERE AM I USING THIS PHOTO?

Then create it for that purpose.

🖼️ HORIZONTAL vs. VERTICAL vs. SQUARE

Take different orientations when possible.

VERTICAL

Useful for:

Stories.

Reels.

TikTok.

Phone-first content.

SQUARE

Useful for:

Profile images.

Certain product/social layouts.

HORIZONTAL

Useful for:

Website banners.

Blog headers.

Desktop website sections.

DON'T TAKE ONE TIGHTLY CROPPED PHOTO AND EXPECT IT TO WORK EVERYWHERE.

Give yourself options.

✂️ LEAVE ROOM AROUND THE SUBJECT

If you're taking a photo that may later be used in a graphic:

DON'T CROP TOO CLOSE.

Leave some space around the person or product.

This gives you room later to:

Add text.

Resize.

Crop.

Remove a background.

Create different layouts.

🎨 WHAT ABOUT GRAPHICS?

Graphics can be useful for:

Sales.

Announcements.

Events.

New products.

Quotes.

Business hours.

Policies.

Social posts.

Website banners.

Blog images.

Email promotions.

You don't have to be a graphic designer to create basic business graphics.

🧰 USE TEMPLATES — BUT MAKE THEM YOUR OWN

Design platforms provide templates that can save time.

You might start with a template and change:

Colors.

Fonts.

Photos.

Wording.

Logo.

Layout.

THE TEMPLATE IS THE STARTING POINT.

It shouldn't make every business look identical.

🖌️ KEEP YOUR BRANDING CONSISTENT

Remember Page 7.

Try to use the same general:

🎨 Colors

🔤 Fonts

🖼️ Logo

📸 Photo style

📝 Tone

This doesn't mean every graphic has to look exactly the same.

It means people should begin recognizing:

“THAT LOOKS LIKE THEIR BUSINESS.”

🚫 DON'T PUT TOO MUCH TEXT ON A GRAPHIC

One of the easiest mistakes to make is trying to put the entire message on the image.

A graphic should often:

GET ATTENTION.

Then the:

Caption.

Website.

Product page.

Email.

or linked page

can provide more information.

If your graphic looks like a full newspaper article...

YOU MAY HAVE TOO MUCH ON IT. 😳

🔠 MAKE THE IMPORTANT INFORMATION BIGGER

Use visual hierarchy.

For example:

40% OFF

MEMBERS ONLY

Shop eligible items today.

The customer's eye should know what to read first.

Don't make:

The headline.

Phone number.

Fine print.

Website.

Sale amount.

Date.

and description

all the same size.

📱 ALWAYS CHECK THE GRAPHIC ON YOUR PHONE

A graphic may look perfect on your computer.

Then you look at it on your phone and realize:

YOU CAN'T READ ANYTHING. 😂

Before posting:

Open it on your phone.

Check:

Text size.

Cropping.

Spacing.

Image quality.

Logo visibility.

Important details.

📐 ONE SIZE DOESN'T ALWAYS FIT EVERY PLATFORM

Different websites and social platforms display images differently.

An image that fits perfectly on one platform may be:

Cropped.

Stretched.

Cut off.

Too small.

or awkwardly positioned

on another.

CHECK THE CURRENT RECOMMENDED IMAGE SIZE FOR THE PLATFORM YOU'RE USING.

Platform specifications can change.

Don't rely forever on a size someone gave you years ago.

💾 SAVE A MASTER COPY

When you create an important graphic:

KEEP AN EDITABLE MASTER COPY.

Then create copies for:

Facebook.

Instagram.

Website.

Email.

Print.

This is much easier than rebuilding the entire design every time.

📂 ORGANIZE YOUR CONTENT

Create a main folder:

BUSINESS CONTENT

Then create folders such as:

📁 Logos

📁 Product Photos

📁 Personal/Brand Photos

📁 Website Images

📁 Social Media

📁 Videos

📁 Flyers

📁 Blog Images

📁 Templates

📁 Archived Content

🗓️ ORGANIZE BY YEAR OR CAMPAIGN TOO

As your business grows, you may want:

📁 2026

Then:

📁 Valentine's Day

📁 Mother's Day

📁 Summer Sale

📁 Black Friday

📁 Christmas

Or organize by product/category.

THERE IS NO PERFECT FILING SYSTEM.

Use one you can actually find things in.

📝 USE CLEAR FILE NAMES

Instead of:

IMG_7863.jpg

try:

black-crossbody-bag-front.jpg

or:

summer-sale-facebook-2026.png

Clear filenames can save you time later and can also be useful when managing website content.

🚫 CAN I USE A PICTURE I FOUND ON GOOGLE?

This is important.

GOOGLE IS A SEARCH ENGINE — NOT A FREE PHOTO LIBRARY.

Finding an image online does not automatically give you permission to use it for your business.

Photos, illustrations, graphics and other creative works may be protected by copyright.

The U.S. Copyright Office explains that photographs are generally protected by copyright when they meet copyright requirements, and the copyright owner controls certain uses of that work.

“I FOUND IT ONLINE” DOES NOT MEAN “I CAN USE IT.”

📸 SAFER SOURCES FOR BUSINESS IMAGES

Consider using:

✔️ Photos you took yourself

✔️ Photos created specifically for your business

✔️ Images supplied by a manufacturer/vendor with permission for your use

✔️ Properly licensed stock images

✔️ Images from services whose licenses allow your intended business use

✔️ AI-generated images when appropriate and permitted

ALWAYS CHECK THE LICENSE.

“Free” doesn't necessarily mean there are no conditions.

🏷️ WHAT ABOUT VENDOR PHOTOS?

If you're selling products supplied by another company, ask whether you're allowed to use their:

Product photos.

Videos.

Descriptions.

Marketing materials.

DON'T ASSUME.

Some suppliers specifically provide authorized marketing materials.

Others may not.

Keep proof of permission when appropriate.

🤖 WHAT ABOUT AI-GENERATED IMAGES?

AI can be useful for creating:

Backgrounds.

Concept images.

Blog graphics.

Marketing ideas.

Illustrations.

Lifestyle concepts.

Social-media graphics.

But use AI responsibly.

DON'T USE AI TO MISREPRESENT THE PRODUCT.

For example:

If you're selling an actual handbag, don't generate an AI image that adds features the real handbag doesn't have.

If you're selling a physical product, customers should be able to understand what the real product looks like.

👤 AI & PEOPLE

AI can also generate or modify images of people.

Be thoughtful about how you use them.

If a picture is supposed to represent:

A real employee.

A real customer.

A real result.

A real property.

A real product.

or a real event...

DON'T CREATE SOMETHING FALSE AND PRESENT IT AS DOCUMENTATION OF WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

AI can create marketing visuals.

It shouldn't be used to deceive customers.

✍🏽 AI CAN HELP WITH CONTENT TOO

AI isn't limited to pictures.

It can help brainstorm:

Product descriptions.

Blog topics.

Headlines.

Social captions.

Email drafts.

FAQs.

Website wording.

Content calendars.

Ad concepts.

But remember:

YOU ARE STILL RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU PUBLISH.

Review:

Prices.

Product specifications.

Policies.

Claims.

Names.

Dates.

Links.

Contact information.

Facts.

Grammar.

Tone.

🚨 AI CAN SOUND VERY CONFIDENT AND STILL BE WRONG

This is important.

AI may sometimes:

Make up information.

Use outdated information.

Misunderstand your request.

Create incorrect product specifications.

Invent features.

Use wording that doesn't fit your business.

NEVER ASSUME “IT SOUNDS PROFESSIONAL” MEANS “IT'S CORRECT.”

Fact-check important information.

🗣️ DON'T LET AI REMOVE YOUR PERSONALITY

AI can polish your writing.

But everything doesn't need to sound like it came from a corporate marketing department.

If your customers are used to hearing YOU, keep some of that personality.

Give AI your:

Ideas.

Experience.

Examples.

Tone.

Then edit the result.

AI SHOULD HELP YOU COMMUNICATE—not erase your voice.

📝 CREATE CONTENT FROM QUESTIONS CUSTOMERS ALREADY ASK

Don't know what to post?

Start with customer questions.

If customers constantly ask:

How does this work?

Make a post.

What's included?

Make a post.

What size is it?

Make a post.

Do you ship?

Make a post.

How do I book?

Make a post.

What's the difference between these two products?

Make a post.

YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE ALREADY GIVING YOU CONTENT IDEAS.

♻️ ONE PIECE OF CONTENT CAN BECOME SEVERAL

You don't always need to create something completely new.

For example:

ONE BLOG POST

can become:

📱 Facebook post

📸 Instagram graphic

🎥 Short video

📧 Email

📌 FAQ

📝 Several social captions

WORK SMARTER WITH THE CONTENT YOU ALREADY CREATED.

📅 CREATE A SIMPLE CONTENT BANK

Keep a running list.

EDUCATIONAL

PRODUCTS

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS

BEHIND THE SCENES

SALES/PROMOTIONS

PERSONAL/BRAND STORY

BLOG IDEAS

Whenever you think:

“That would make a good post...”

write it down.

🛍️ CONTENT DOESN'T ALWAYS HAVE TO SELL SOMETHING

If every single post says:

BUY THIS!

BUY THIS!

BUY THIS!

people may stop paying attention.

Mix in content that:

Educates.

Answers questions.

Shows behind the scenes.

Explains your process.

Introduces you.

Shows how products are used.

Shares business updates.

Builds trust.

Then yes...

SELL SOMETHING TOO. 😂

You're running a business.
